I think "most commented" would be a near repeat of "high score today"...
You can re-favorite an image to bump it to the front page, but there is a cooldown period so that if you do this too often it won't actually get bumped. Also, even if you do this, it's likely to only be on the front page for a few minutes due to how fast that section moves.
Why can’t there be a cool down interval for comments?
It seems site administrators perceive an incentive for commenters to bump an image to the front page. This same incentive now has an even lower friction option, that is, just pushing the “favorite“ button. But now I am reading that an underlying logic exists as a kind of brake, a cool down, to prevent this bumping via pushing “favorite” from happening indiscriminately.
Just curious: why does this cooling down period apply to “favorite” actions, but not to commenting actions?
Commenters here certainly can't be considered a representative of all members and even less so of all visitors, but it does appear that the weight of opinion among those interested in and involved in site enough to comment is in favor of restoring the "recently commented." There should still be few enough to make counting them practical for the administrator and moderators. There is some disagreement about what to throw out if something has to be eliminated to restore "recently commented," but the substitute "recently favorited" looks like the plurality choice.
I never noticed this big epidemic of spam comments. Seems to be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
The "recommended for you" actually works for me, probably because I don't favorite images left right and center, only the ones that really stand out to me.
The " recommended for you" dont really work but i understand the reason for replace the " recently commented " hardcore spam commenteres are not on top anymore
if you're gonna get rid of anything, i'd say hidden gems, and recently favorited in that order. recommended for you i find to be pretty cool. recently commented has always been the best one though.
I always liked the Recently Commented section. If you need to make room on the home page, I would vote to lose the Recommended For You section. I have never found it to be of any use here.
No problem with the way it is. I usually stick to the ones I've "subscribed" to and don't have a log of attention to the the different sections, other than scrolling through them.
No, what I mean is let everyone pick if they want to see last commented, and/or recently favourited, and/or hidden gems, and/or recommended for you, and/or highscore today/this week/this month, and maybe even random.
Recently favorited is completely uninteresting, anyone can favorite anything, there is no engagement there. But a comment is something worth looking at, it is interesting to see what others think of a picture.
Just showing random images would have the same effect as this, actually it would be better, as old forgotten gems could show up, that nobody discovered yet.
Edit: plus without the recently commented section it is basically pointless to comment on anything older than a week as nobody will see it or answer it ever.
There also seems to be a lot of redundancy between the high score section and recently favorited section for obvious reasons.
Not only that and I don't know how many others I speak for here but the interest in seeing/interacting with what someone else said about a picture (really any picture tbh) far out-weighs any interest I have in what picture someone else wants to look at. These are two different things that were artificially brought together by the 'recently commented' section, and now not only has the interesting part of that pairing been removed, but extra emphasis has been placed on the part that I don't care about. It's basically now just a high-turnover random picture section, which to be fair isn't necessarily a bad thing. But it's clear that the part people are disliking the most is the removal of the option to see who's saying what. And I don't really ever recall reading publicly posted complaints from people saying things like "Oh wow I sure wish all these [censored] people would stop making these stupid low-effort comments just to exploit this section." I didn't look very hard though and maybe there was a thread about it somewhere. Maybe the site owners were getting a lot of complaints?
The problem with the "Recently Commented" section was that it created a link between leaving a comment to bumping an image to the front page, thus incentivizing low-effort comments just to get an image more attention. This incentive no longer exists, since recently commented images no longer show up on the front page.
My hope is the new "Recently Favorited" section has more or less the same benefit as Recently Commented did (showing you a selection of images other users are interacting with that you might not have otherwise seen) without the drawback of incentivizing behavior we don't want.
Maybe this is over analyzing but I always kind of thought the fact that comments would put a pic in the 'recently commented' section and get it more views and likes would actually disincentivize a lot of the nasty or whining comments that can really make the comments section bad.
I MUCH prefer recently favorited to commented, because it seems to refresh much more often. I can click on a photo to download, and when I return to the home page, I find new favorited photos to click on.
Looking at the comments in this thread, it seems pretty obvious to me that everyone has a different opinion on what they'd want to see, so why not give the entire list of "sort options" and let everyone select what they're interested in.
I too, like the recently commented idea, but I know that there is a filter for that.
I get the idea of discouraging "low effort" comments. As someone who has tried to be at least a bit
creative and (hopefully) a bit humorous with my comments over the years, I wonder if this will tend
to hide my comments from more of the members. Then again, that might not be a bad thing. Ha! :/
I have no idea how much coding would go into it, but wouldn't it be a great idea that everyone could select what they'd want on the frontpage?

Recently favorited is pointless. There are hundreds of images being favorited every minute. It's just an irrelevant blur!

Same here. I really appreciate “recommended for you” because it does a great job of displaying images I would not otherwise find.

Recently commented - it captures what’s “viral”

Go back to recently commented
I prefer recently commented...
recently commented was better…

Nope, terrible idea. Can we at leat have both?

ME LIKE!!!
It's nice when something gets done
Wouldn't this basically be your favorites list?

they should remove recently favorite and bring back recently commented
