Should bodybuilders use steroids?

Oct 02, 2021 - permalink

I understand. But these are likely black market steroids. Steroids are actually very potent and potentially dangerous drugs. If they are being produced in some back room lab, most likely there is no quality control. It takes a lot of sophisticated and expensive lab equipment to manufacture steroids. I doubt these operations have the resources or even are interested in the investment. Pure steroids are very potent drugs. Without getting into the detailed chemistry, steroid impurities could be toxic and carcinogenic. It is interesting that an entire industry, the IFBB, depends on its membership taking potentially harmful drugs. This goes for guys as well.

well the steroids i was offered [idk cause i didnt take drugs whatsoever even aspirin ] were the drugs of the 80's the same of course..and there was always talk of the side effects and damage..so i never bothered with them. they maybe more benificial today and less detrimental along with hgh...but idk..im not an expert although i act like one here..cause i am a dreamer lol...anyway heres an exerp from lyle alzado's wiki

Alzado was one of the first major US sports figures to admit to using anabolic steroids. In the last year of his life, as he battled against the brain tumor that eventually caused his death, Alzado asserted that his steroid abuse directly led to his fatal illness.[16] Alzado recounted his steroid abuse in an article in Sports Illustrated,

I started taking anabolic steroids in 1969 and never stopped. It was addicting, mentally addicting. Now I'm sick, and I'm scared. Ninety percent of the athletes I know are on the stuff. We're not born to be 300 lb (140 kg) or jump 30 ft (9.1 m). But all the time I was taking steroids, I knew they were making me play better. I became very violent on the field and off it. I did things only crazy people do. Once a guy sideswiped my car and I beat the hell out of him. Now look at me. My hair's gone, I wobble when I walk and have to hold on to someone for support, and I have trouble remembering things. My last wish? That no one else ever dies this way.[17]

The role that anabolic steroids may have played in Alzado's death has been the subject of controversy. The lymphoma of the brain that took his life has not been associated clinically with steroid use. The claim was denounced as a myth in the 2008 documentary Bigger, Stronger, Faster and by Wisconsin pediatrician and steroid expert Norm Fost but not proven 100%.[citation needed]

idk anything about todays steroids..also i am a genuis..in my mind lol..and will devise genetic alterations for mass muscle ..i will crank up antioxidant output 100x..i will be the immortal muscle man who cannot age due to zero cellular degradation..i will...oh wait a minute ..my moms calling down to me telling me dinner is ready...ah just dreaming again in my dank basement..i have to get that dehumidifier fixed..

@Scythian in 1985 i joined a gym and the owner offered me steroids....i imagine the steroid manufacturers have'' pushers ''[lol] all down the chain.

I used to work at Gold's in Venice Beach and honestly there were pushers that were members of the gym and they were frequently at the gym 24/7 offering steroids and HGH to gym goers. They would do it behind the staffs back because they didn't want to be noticed and thrown out permanently.

@Godzilla_1....i imagine gold gym did not want to get associated with any of that unless it was with the super elite bb's such as arnold/franco etc.. but that was prolly back in the 70s b4 golds skyrocketed and i imagine corporate lawyers advised them ''no'' to any illegal things ..or risk massive lawsuits etc. which maybe idk but the policy to throw out any pushers on the spot once caught was an employee mandate was a part of that legal strategy...but it was probably wild back in the 60's..but idk.

although the gym i joined in 85 wasn't famous ..i seem to recall the brothers that owned the gym had set several weightlifting records they were white...and there was a black lightweight who set some lifting records internationally as well there and he was a vegetarian..so i imagine they all juiced but somehow masked the test idk.

im all for genetic manipulation on the dna and cellular level ..as most humans on this planet have some moral flaw and many are just downright mean..lol..let the experimentation begin..let the bending of steel bars become common place ..allow the ripping of arms from sockets like a wookie commence!yes i say eliminate the fat from our bodies and the impossibly huge and proportioned physiques commence ..let the nudity spring forth for it is a shame to cover such fantastic forms..please oh please allow us to become so perfect that we have not the energy for violence but only for sex![i maybe channeling jack chalker a bit] allow an older man like myself to go to [logan's run carousel] at an age of my choosing and gaze out amongst the celebrating crowd and nude huge muscular perfection knowing the youth has been engineered for peace and love..perhaps servitude.yes let perfect bodies be produced en mass let us sweep away captain kirk and usher in khan..i will not scream ''khan'' as i pop from existence in carousel i will exclaim bliss at all the perfection....this has been a jimmycolt production.

That would be swell but not genetic manipulation. yes

That's pretty much what people mean when they say "he/she has good genetics" in bodybuilding. They already have that all but essential foundation for building lots of muscle (mesomorphs).

To the original question:

No, bodybuilders do not need steroids. But if they are to reach the pro level, let alone have any success competing at that level, then they do need steroids. That's just the way it is.

But then it also depends on your definition of "bodybuilder." For me, when someone says "female bodybuilder," that means someone who literally competes in the Women's Bodybuilding division. If your definition of the word is much broader than that, then we'd be here all day while I write about women who dose vs. women who don't dose and the general fallacies people make in assuming that just because a woman is a certain size that she must be dosing, or that smaller women don't dose at all. There is in fact an extremely large grey area that it seems most people don't consider at all.

So all I'm saying is that smaller women who you'd think aren't dosing, are... and some larger women (up to a point) who you'd swear are taking steroids, aren't. It just depends on the person... some take steroids when they don't even really need it, and some don't take it just because their bodies naturally respond better to training than others (genetics).

BB can be done w/o roids or gear. It will be harder to do but not impossible and the gains will be long lasting.

@capitanplanetita..i agree with you..i am for the all natural look myself...like gymnasts i don't imagine gymnasts were on steroids in the Olympics..but idk..but most of the male gymnasts had and have great muscle bodies...of course the women gymnasts are great...i always liked vannessa atler she had some great muscle and upper body size at 16 i think. but if we have to have huge roid assisted bodies[ which look awesome] i am for future genetic manipulation to get there.since i cant make everyone live an agrarian lifestyle where only things we can grow or make by hand with no fuel powered devices. i meant to say we should all be low tech farmers and fisherman etc using only the barter system and all the world living peacefully as it can...but tech is here and no one wants to live a hard lifestyle of centuries past etc. so that is the only reason i am for genetic manipulation..because its inevitable with the mass of people who follow.and i know im using electricity etc..lol..but its lonely out in the woods with no one else..lol. so i am here..anyway when your in the woods someone will come along and tell you the vast acreage is theirs and to vamoose.

Despite everything I point out about steroids and black market steroids, many in the IFBB don’t develop cancer or die young. They look great for a while and eventually stop using steroids and do other things in life. However, I think people into lifting weights and managing their appearance naturally continue doing it for much longer and hold onto gains in muscle better as they age. Unfortunately there are no clinical trials around this but I suspect there is useful anecdotal experience about cycling and stacking etc coupled with good genetics that help men and women in the IFBB make progress. Myself and my partner would even consider a 10-12 week cycle of oxandrolone or a SARM per year if we were certain of the identity, dose and purity of what we are taking. I guess we need to sign up for genetic manipulation but by the time that’s an option I’ll need it just to help me go to the bathroom!

Buying steroids from someone else is bad idea, He would get banned permanently at the gym . Vegans and vegetarians can get same mass as meat eaters. Urinal and blood tests can tell the results.

dont need clinical trials...look at arnold.a few years ago when he was...72! a young punk launched a flying kick at his back from behind..lol the dude fell to the ground and arnold was fine... i seen what i presume are 72 year olds.. though might no be that old who need canes just to walk...theres carl weathers and stallone..theres chuck norris... there was jack lalanne who opened the first fitness gym in america..who lived to 96 and i believe in 1976, age 62: To celebrate the US Bicentennial, he swam one mile—again shackled and handcuffed—while towing 13 boats (symbolizing the 13 original colonies) with 76 people on board...tom brady[i am an anti fan of his] but still with his fitness scheme..he is playing at 44 at a high level [cause he never had 7 concussions or so because bellichick fielded good olines] before brady and favre it was unheard of for players to play so long..with only a few anomalies such as george blanda in the nfl's 100 year history ..im 59 and it was normal for people to die at my age or in their 60's when i was a kid in the 70's..60 was considered a long life. so we don't need a clinical trial the evidence is all around us..while en mass humans live longer than centuries before it is the individuals who exercise and do not overindulge with food ..who live long. i wore the same size pants from age 15 to 49.. 34's..and this past decade i have gone up 5 sizes or so.my goal is to return to those 34's lol. i got down to 36's last year..but fell off the food and cola wagon.lol.

@jimmycolt. I meant clinical trials on cycling steroids and effects on building muscle and negative side effects. When steroids are prescribed by an MD, they are not cycled and not used over prolonged periods. Unfortunately, the FDA not interested in promoting lifestyle drugs.

@Scythian ok i understand now. if they did do trials of course there would be a side effect listed for what was taken for each different steroid and its benefits. people would have a better idea on what to use safely and what they may want to avoid.

Business owners, in the case of those brothers, need customers to come to the their gym and be members so they bait the current gym goers with steroids and HGH to get huge and indirectly promote their business to the locals and make money. So their gym will be known for creating huge bodybuilders and get noticed more often from word of mouth and other advertising. It was the 80's after all and there was no internet!

Yes, it can be done without gear but you could never come close to looking what you’d look like with it. I just think a lot of people are way too quick to hop on. Rather than getting close to their genetic potential and understanding training/nutrition they just hop right on real young. I mean even bikini competitors use some mild stuff and let’s be honest, basically none of them need to use anything to get that look. I love the hardcore steroid look, but there seems to be a longevity when lifters create a base for themselves without anything than start taking stuff.

I think this is a silly question for bodybuilding. It’s like asking “should sky divers jump out of planes?!”

Bodybuilding is extremely hard when it is done naturally and it's takes years and years to develop a hardcore looking body for both men and women. When taking steroids and HGH while working out the results getting there is an easy one and does not take long at all. Plus the nutrition bodybuilding industry that makes protein powder, creatine, and more supplements usually use hardcore bodybuilders on steroids and HGH as there main selling point.

HGH and steroids shouldn't be used at the same time, may accelerate the side effects.
