Sooooo.... I have an old corolla that I love and we have been together for 14 years now, but she has died :( and now I have to find a new car. I workout and have a bit of muscle and I am short. And one thing that has changed a lot with cars apparently is the seats. The sales people at the last three dealerships have all said similar things and have told me that the seat "bolstering" is now much improved. Thats all well and good, but my lats are squished between the "Lateral side bolsters" and its not comfortable. And trying to find a small to medium sized car that is reasonably priced and has comfy seats is proving to be a bit of an ask. Who would have thought. Any ideas?
The comfiest seats I can think of are in late 90s American sedans (like the Le Sabre), but those are far from small-medium on a global scale. Given that they were seen as grandparent cars, they used to be quite cheap. Is the Corolla no longer fixable?
John6979 Its a 1998 red 4 door manual, and that is about all I know. gooberpea5 I am in Australia, so have no idea what 90s American cars are like lol. And I want something no older than about 4 or 5 years. All the Toyotas, Kias, Hyundis, Mazadas, and Hondas all have similar seats.
Hmmm I see. I've heard recent Sentras (2026, SL trim especially) have pretty amazing seats, but IDK if you get those Down Under.
Do you have an automotive upholstery shop anywhere near you? You could probably have them add an inch of foam to the seat cushion and seat back while retaining the OEM seat cover.
a_fan_of_things Such a great idea and after contacting an upholster if it is a possibility to alter the seat and they said that because of the airbags, they wont even touch them. Apparently the seats in most new cars have airbags in them :(
John6979 I dont really want a big car as I live in the city and have no real use for a 4x4. And there are terrible social stigmas with them in the cities too. Not that I would care but it goes with the territory hah haaa.
Yeah, there are usually torso airbags located in the offending seat bolster. Guess they are little liability adverse, normally by keeping the OEM seat cover the breakaway stitching is unaffected. You might be able to get a sheepskin cover that fits just over just the cushion / seat back to bulk it up enough that the (uncovered) bolsters aren't uncomfortable though (maybe not the most aesthetically pleasing but has the added benefit of being cool in summer and warm in winter).
