Consistently slow speeds

Nov 01, 2025 - permalink

Hi there -

I've been experiencing consistently slow speeds over the last year on all parts of the site, and the issue seems to continue to get worse over time. It's not my phone if laptop - I have a 2 gigabyte fiber line, and a T-Mobile 5G line in one of the biggest markets in the US.

I have multiple phones, and the issue persists regardless of whether I'm on my 2 gigabyte fiber line wifi at home, using an Ethernet cable for my laptop, or outside using 5G data on my cell phone.

I am skeptical that the issue is limited to me, was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. It can take forever to load my notifications, or finish an image search.

My hypothesis is that it's related to the significant growth of the site - I've been a member for over 16 years, and the number of photos and videos added since then is enormous.

Curious whether anyone else has experienced consistently slow loading on the site?

I've been having slow loading over the past week or so but it hasn't been a long term issue, only the past 2-3 days.

There are certain times when the site is approaching the limits of what the hardware of the server can handle. I've spent a good amount of time over the last few years optimizing various things but I am reaching the point where I have mostly picked off the low-hanging fruit and further optimizations would mean smaller gains in performance.

I will most likely move the site to better hardware in 2026.

I made a change to the notifications page to render fewer unread notifications so hopefully now at least that page should load faster.

I don't know if this is something on my end but I can't see all new notifications. The page just stops ... is this how it's intended to function?

Could you post a screenshot? When I look at your notifications they look fine.

Thank you! It fixed the problem ❤️

Any notifications (read or unread) older than a week are no longer shown. Is this what you’re seeing, or is it some other behaviour?

I agree with the others. With the new limit, I'm concerned that not all my notifications fit on the screen.

Previously my notification page was packed with posts, now it's just a few + they will gone soon. I can't see ANY previously read notifications. Unread are also looks missing. Previously I would get dozens of new photos and several threads updates per day, now it's only a couple of photos with occasionally thread update. I'm 100% missing out on my subscriptions and it started just about 3 days ago.

what about the notifications less than a week old I cannot see ?

I believe Chainer made some changes to how the notifications show up in the list, but yes I too have had my notifications list heavily pruned now. It barely shows any of the "read" notifications that are 1 or 2 days old now. Sure, they are "read", but I'd still like to see them and get reminded of them once a while.

The new logic is:

  • It shows every notification that is 24 hours old, or less.
  • It always shows unread notifications regardless of age.
  • Once you see an unread notification (making it read), it sticks around for another hour even if it is over a day old, so you don't have a situation where you navigate back to it and it's gone.

If anyone thinks it is doing something other than this, it may be a bug; let me know.

The old logic was it would show all notifications up to 7 days old. This was significantly taxing on the server.

I see, fair enough. I'd still prefer the old version, but I understand since there's a meaningful reason behind the change.

Ah ok, I was away from the site for a couple days and thought mine had gotten truncated, but if I'm understanding correctly I wouldn't have actually lost any unread ones.

Any chance we could try reimplementing more than just the last day’s notifications? Maybe 3 days? Or some middle ground. I feel like I miss out on some of the girls I follow.

I guess I could implement some sort of paging so you could see older notifications, but it's not a high priority and... again, I would like to say that you do not miss out on unread notifications, even if they are over a day old. (Unless there's a bug, in which case you should let me know.)

Nov 09, 2025 - permalink

Oh, good to know. I thought I was only seeing the most recent and some were being bumped off. That works for me. Thanks.

I would rather pay to get the old notifications back than to have this new useless... I click on a pic and into the model and some pic and back out to notifications and then it reloads and all is gone.

It's gotten really slow in the afternoon hours now. I just have to give up and walk away until mid evening.

I experience this too in the mornings (EST), which limits some of my activities. I’m guessing GWM is really popular in Europe?

I'm in NYC, so it's bad here around 4pm EST. Could be just traffic volume.

I always have wifi problems on really windy days which seems like every day now on "Wind Island".
