Also, I generally use https://godownloader.com for downloading Douyin clips; you paste a video link (like https://www.douyin.com/video/7241800423856770319, not sure about other formats), and it usually lets you download it in better quality than a lot of other methods. Generally the button you want is either the first "Video No Watermark" one, or "Video No Watermark HD", although the latter versions often seem to be reencoded upsizes (which I believe are still done by Douyin internally), which can look weird and sometimes aren't worth the filesizes. Depends on the clip, though.

Some general usage tips for Douyin.
Since I've never been able to create an account on the service (you need a Chinese phone # now from what I can tell), I don't bother with the mobile app, I just use the douyin.com website from my desktop browser instead.
The site tries to make you log in frequently, but you can mostly use it without having an account. I'd recommend either using Chrome and turning on the auto-translate, or using a translation extension for other browsers.
The Captcha popups like this are fairly self-explanatory, just slide the puzzle piece into place by dragging on the arrow button (it has to be pretty exact):
There are a couple other types that pop up more rarely, the ones I've seen are either "click this set of characters", or "click two objects with the same shape". Auto-translate is helpful here.
For this type of logon prompt, just click the X at the top-right:

All douyin accounts have both a Display Name and a Douyin ID, the ID is limited to standard English letters, numbers, underscores, and periods, while the display name can have Chinese or other characters, emojis, etc.
For instance, on this account (see also the screenshot below) the display name is "风雨战队 🌊 豆瓣酱" (something like "Team Storm 🌊 Doubanjiang"), while the Douyin ID is "doubanjiang312". This is a little more obvious when you auto-translate the page.
Note also the search box at the top of the page. It will try to prompt you to sign on when you click it, but if you're fast enough you can click in it and Ctrl-v your search term (such as a Douyin ID), before the logon popup, then dismiss the prompt and click the magnifying glass to do the search.
A couple useful Chinese terms to search for, apart from specific ID's:
肌肉女 (muscle girl/muscular woman)
二头肌 (biceps)
(A combination of the two, 肌肉女 二头肌, also brings up some interesting stuff that I want to go back to later)
Finally, once you're looking at a video, the best way I've found to download them is to paste the link for it (like https://www.douyin.com/video/7163122750574431503) into the site https://godownloader.com (there are a few others that work, but I've gotten the best results with that one). Generally, you would want to download both the "Video No Watermark" and "Video No Watermark HD" versions to compare (any other options can usually be ignored).
Sometimes the "HD" version just seems to be an upscale with weird artifacts, sometimes it's actually lower in resolution or bitrate, etc. Also, sometimes the HD version will be encoded as something other than H.264/AVC, meaning you wouldn't be able to upload it here without conversion. (EDIT: Forgot I mentioned all this in a previous post, but I'll leave it here to make the guide self-contained)

since the latter involve an extra redirection step that can slow things down (at least on desktop), but I found out the reason those weren't working at all for me before is that one of my Firefox extensions was blocking some tracking sites they need to load the captcha. So now I can use them on desktop, they're just slower.

Since we're all sharing tips, when it comes to downloading, Godownloader is great for individual posts, but I've found that (at least in Chrome), you can hover over a video, right-click, and select "Copy video address." It's not a permanent link, so it will expire in an hour or so, but it's the video directly sourced from Douyin's CDN:
With this flow, you can pretty quickly get through a user's account when using a download manager like JDownloader2: You hover over a video, right-click to get the URL, then CMD/CTRL + Tab to JDownloader2 and paste in the URL.
For those who've used JD2, JD2 doesn't seem to recognize the copied link with its Clipboard Observer feature, so you do have to manually paste in the URL to trigger its deep dive feature. If you're familiar with programming, you can, however, create a script to observe Clipboard changes and print out the changes over time, then copy the URLs all at once to JD2 (with a few nuances), but the above flow is really quick as is. Here's a Pastebin with some instructions and a quick script. Ignore this if you're not familiar with Python or programming, haha.
Regardless of how you get the URLs, once you do have the URLs in JD2, you can start all of the downloads at once and be done in a flash!

Comparing a couple videos downloaded like that to the versions from https://godownloader.com, in one case it was better in quality than the "Video No Watermark" one and in one case worse, but in both cases it wasn't as good as the "Video No Watermark HD" versions, although those were HEVC-encoded.
You've actually complicated my workflow for these by giving me another yet version to compare, but I'll thank you anyway :)

Hahaha, my apologies for adding more cases for you to try! I'm sure GoDownloader has better quality, but I honestly find myself satisfied with the JD2 quality with how convenient it is. Plus, the only issue with GoDownloader is that if you're downloading multiple videos at once, it can add time since you have to keep revisiting it to trigger new downloads, where as with the link copying approach, you can just build up URLs and send them all at once.
Honestly, if GoDownloader supported pasting in multiple URLs at once, that'd be amazing, but with its single-URL approach only, and my penchant for doing mass downloading, it doesn't work for my case, y'know?

Ah yeah, Douyin specifically seems to have lifted that, thankfully indeed! As an aside, if you're ever using Weibo, they do try and limit your results, but you can circumvent this by clicking on the last video/image, and then once the overlay/preview is closed, more images/videos will load. Kinda tedious, but not that bad. I know Red (Xiaohongshu) is basically unusable on desktop and is only really accessible on mobile, so that's another app to consider -- I can't be bothered only because it's too much of a hassle to start saving images from my phone to my computer or the like. It's also not an app I've been able to emulate with something like Android Studio, even with a valid phone login, so I've given up on that one.

Just an update on accessing douyin.com from a web browser (see my earlier post on this page), I went to the site recently to check an account, and they seem to have added a feature where you have to verify using an SMS message to a Chinese phone # if you're connecting from a foreign IP, even without an account. The popup looks like this:
It's easy enough to get around if you have a VPN though, just set the location to Hong Kong or Taiwan and it goes back to working the old way without additional verification.
(I also tried a few sites like https://sms24.me but never got a text, apparently it may actually be a robo-voicecall that reads out the code to you, so those text message sites wouldn't work)
Do you guys have a limit of images which you can view without having an account? Some of you above said they'd removed this limitation, but it's still in place for me.
