I think that what you have to remember here is that you're talking to a guy who sees sex as a one-off procreational event.
He has, quite rightly, recognised that he's only going to get so many shots at it so has completely binned the concept of doing it as some kind of recreational activity. He's like a male spider who understands that sex is a one time deal given that they will be killed and eaten shortly after reaching climax.
I mean, for what it's worth I agree with you, for most guys sex it's something they do semi-regularly for fun and possibly even with a sense of romance at or around the relevant time. But for this dude it's a one-off Highlander event, equivalent to some rare cosmological occurence in which multiple interstellar bodies have aligned in perfect unison creating a once per millennia phenomena for terrestrial observers during which he's rolling the dice on the survival of his own bloodline. The stakes are as high as they can get.
There's nothing you can do to get him to see sex as something that he should regard as a fairly common occurrence that could just be enjoyed with relatively low pressure.
