percentage of female members out of total gym members (155 total votes)
Pareto's Law in effect. Weights room is 80-90% guys, cardio area 80-90% girls.
Rant incoming.
40% women at my current gym, at the weight room.
For the last couple of years I drove to an old school rusty weight gym but I changed to the modern one because it's at a walking distance from were I live.
Big mistake, the new one is full of people with iphones on tripods, has way less free dumbbells and many of them are walked to the other side of the gym to perform weird glute exercises.
Old gym there were days I would not spot a single woman. Never a tripod. Even if some equipment was used by another member he would share it. Now you would find a member, usually a woman, having a small media studio going around the equipment, wearing huge headphones not able to communicate.
It's not rare to have a trainee roaming around with a cameraman shooting training videos. I have prepaid an annual membership because it sounded as good value , big mistake.
OK, I can relate to the latest comments.
Right now I am in a hipster gym: proper weights and machines, but not much of a spirit. People (men and women alike) all isolate themselves. When I ask someone for how many sets the machine is still taken, the first thing that happens is that the small earphones come out and I have to repeat the question. Would estmiate about a third are female in the gym, but non of them hardcore bodybuilder-
Used to train in a hardcore gym in the 90s. People did talk to each other and also supported at the heavy lifts when needed. Most women came for aerobics or dance lessons, however we had about 7, 8 competitive female bodybuilders. And they were grinding, Bikini or Figure did not exist back then. At some time we had more female stage athletes then male ones.
So yes, today I see more women seriously working out at machines or free weights. But on the top/competitive level it was way better back then.

Check your T+C's if you can get your money back, if not chalk it up to having bought Sight Unseen and determine never to repeat that mistake. With anything.
Meanwhile during those workouts when you can't work around an equipment-hogging harpy, ask how many sets she still has, if she won't commit to a number, hover around her, just be on your phone as you do, ensure that the lens isn't covered by your phone case, that way she'll think there's a chance you might be filming her - you know you're not, (any CCTV around the area could capture your screen and confirm you aren't), but she won't, and that might jolt her into getting her rump off the machine.
All that assumes she's not a GWM you want to befriend, of course. That'd be a wholly different approach... :)
I selected 30-50% as I assumed the original question was in reference to the weights/machines area. I'd say it's in the 30-40% range depending on the time and day of week which is much higher than years ago where you might only see one or two women lifting. There are ALOT more women lifting nowadays.

Yes, thats how to understand the orginal question. Only considering gym members who lift (machines, free weights, cross fit), no yoga, dance or pilates classes.
Independent on whether they compete or not.

This trend needs to die. Many women brave enough to enter the weights area are too afraid to pick up anything heavier than a feather because they're afraid of "getting bulky". And the men are afraid of doing any cardio at all because it will "kill their gains".
Everyone should be doing both, regardless of gender. It's healthier, and there's nothing embarrassing about having strength AND endurance.

I almost completely agree but it's not a trend. It's a practice inherent to a very long Dark Age.
at your best guess
