In my notifications, I noticed that a few days ago, lots of images were newly tagged with "shot put", "discus throw", "spear/javelin", "hammer throw" and "heptathlon".
The problem is that although these images show shot putters, javelin throwers, discus throwers, and hammer throwers, many of the newly-tagged images don't actually show those athletes performing those actions, or holding those objects.
For example, someone tagged these images with "spear/javelin":
These are some of the photos that were tagged with "discus throw":
I disagree with those tag changes. I don't think it's helpful to tag those images with event tags that aren't shown in those photos. We have "track and field" as the model-level tag for athletes in all these events, and IMO it's only useful to tag photos with their specific events if those events are clearly happening in those photos.
In the same way, Simone Biles has "gymnast" as a model-level tag, but her photos are only tagged "gymnastics" if they directly show her practising, competing, or performing a gymnastic activity.
Relatedly, I don't think "heptathlon" is a useful tag, because you can't tell from a photo alone whether an athlete is running, jumping, or performing a shot put or javelin throw as an individual specialist event, or as part of a heptathlon. So IMO "heptathlete" would be a useful model-level tag, but I don't think "heptathlon" is helpful on photos that only show one event at a time.
But instead of just going ahead and removing all the tags that I think are incorrect, I thought I should bring it up for discussion here. So, my suggestion is:
Create new model-level tags: shot putter, discus thrower, javelin thrower, hammer thrower, heptathlete (all as child tags of "track and field")
Use shot put, discus throw, spear/javelin, hammer throwonly for photos in which those events/apparatus are clearly taking place. (And not for things like photos where they're holding a flag because they've just won a medal in one of those events.)
Remove the heptathlon tag from existing images, because multi-event tags are not useful for photos that only show one event at a time. (Though it might still be useful for multi-event video montages, images that combine photos of several events, or photos showing athletes posing next to the final scoreboard.)
We already handle "pole vaulter" (model-level tag, a child of "track and field") and "pole vault" (for photos that show the actual apparatus/event) in this way.
