PS Kirk was the best of you. Naming a single better person, alive in the USA right now, might be a bit of a conversation ender but have at it.
Too easy: Noam Chomsky. Alice Walker. Willie Nelson. Bob Dylan. Bruce Springsteen. Stevie Wonder. Edward Witten. Dolly Parton. Steve Wozniak. To name but a few.

That is a terrible list of people to compare.
I'm well past the "both sides are equal" mollification. The POTENTIAL for good and bad may be equal for the left and the right; however, my POV of the past 10 years' REALITY says that it's been one side that clearly favors emotionality over reason, disingenuous debate, and violence under color of protest. There are certain killings I can get behind, like the airport Doucet shooting or various violent criminals around the world taking the room temperature challenge, but I've never had the sick satisfaction to openly celebrate the murder of someone for having a different POV, who was not even endorsing violence against the groups he criticized. I don't expect Kirk's murder to radicalize a large segment of the populace, but I think a lot of them will no longer be fence-sitting when it comes to choices hinging on partisanship.
