When did the "muscle worship" become a thing?

Feb 12, 2025 - permalink

I don't know if this thread already exists.

I've seen some vintage videos from the late 80's about female muscle worship, but I assume that it was very rare back then. Even today there's quite the idea of us being weirdos, so I can imagine that it was even worse back in the day.

But even so, when did muscle worship become a thing as a business?

The male version probably emerged in ancient Greek or Roman times or before.

Muscle worship in the active form, for example sessions, kicked off somewhere in the 90s. It went hand in hand with the internet boom, as it allowed provder and punter to get together.

But the admiration of human muscle as such, as bonaciti mentioned, runs deep in the human soul. Strength athletes were the target of amirers as well as circus women well over 100 years ago.

It was at least a decade before the 90s.

I'm confident there have been men attracted to muscular women for thousands of years. The same is likely true of foot fetishes and other kinks. Who knows why. I feel like there may be a genetic component to it. All I know is that I was getting girls to flex for me, armwrestle and lift me from 1st grade on. Long before I even hit puberty, I found I got an insane dopamine rush from seeing a girl flex, feeling her strength or seeing her lift something heavy etc. That tells me that at least part of this may be in the DNA.

Why, I don't know. Perhaps its an evolutionary adaptation. Seeking out physically strong mates makes a certain type of sense. They would be more likely to survive a harsh world. They'd be more likely to produce stronger, naturally muscular offspring. I've spent a lot of time pondering it as I'm sure many of you have.

Following on from Hedgeborn’s post, I’m reminded of quintessential 90’s British lads mag, FHM, conducting a survey amongst its readership about creating the perfect woman. How tall would she be, how big would her boobs be, what would her hair colour be? Stuff like that. Juvenile yes, but for me at least the final results were interesting, because I like muscular women.

Turns out, so did the majority of the readership of FHM. The perfect woman was fit, lean, had abs, worked out, and knew how to fight. For FHM readers it was very, very desirable if your girlfriend could stand up for herself, could throw a punch, could fight and, beyond that, could seriously hurt someone. Paraphrasing, FHMs perfect woman could absolutely kick your friends asses, but was a sex kitten for you.

I just found that an interesting thing. I also agree, there’s something hardwired in to a lot of men when it comes to women. I think we like them tough, and strong, and able to throw hands. I think it’s rather an unspoken thing too, but widely held.

and knew how to fight.

The thing that actually turns me on the most.

I think the fetish always existed among some men but you won't find much evidence of it existing before the 1980s. because female bodybuilding in the modern sense didn't exist until the 80s. but there were muscle women before that era too like gymnasts or other women trying to become stronger for various reasons throughout history some were quite huge even by modern standards.

and another reason why it got popular in the 80s is because of vhs. so people could watch stuff that was too niche for tv or movie theaters. there used to be movie theaters that played porn but it had to appeal to a wider audience and also magazines were useful for spreading fetish content for cheap. but even making magazines was more expensive in the more distant past and not everyone could read and anything sexual was censored before the 1950s. so the further you go back in time the less niche topics get mentioned. at least with female muscle we can trace it back to before the internet.

some other things were even more obscure and you can't find anything about it from before the 2000s despite it existing before the internet too. and with if you keep going back further in the past the scope of things keeps getting more narrow. because there was less technology less people people were more busy trying to survive and less people could even write. and most of the old texts got destroyed over the years.

There could have been female muscle worship in secret 1000 years ago. but nobody was going to write about it. nobody involved could probably even write and even if they could why waste paper on it it was expensive back then and could get them in trouble. and even in the 1960s who would publish writings about that. the world was just getting used to playboy being a thing.

This is all very interesting. I remember the early days of the internet and certain websites dedicated to these women. All the videos had a grainy quality to them, but seemed to suggest there was some type of niche market for them.

I don't really do sessions anymore, but the times I have done muscle worship have been fucking great.

Around 780 BC, if not before

I'm confident there have been men attracted to muscular women for thousands of years.

In the Villa Romana del Casale, a 4th century Roman villa in Sicily, there is a mosaic on the wall featuring athletic women running, playing sports, and even working out with weights. They are scantily clad in what are described as "bikinis" but functionally closer to a sports bra and shorts in today's attire. Muscle definition is visible on their arms and legs, though they're nowhere near today's muscle women. The mosaic is remarkable not only for putting the invention of two-piece skimpy attire much earlier than commonly thought, but for showing the ancient Romans valued strength and athleticism in women.

I thought I read somewhere that it was Kay Baxter who first took muscle worship into paid sessions… does anyone else remember that or is it a figment of my imagination?

sorry but during the 90s you had "bodyshaping", "kiana tom", etc. at noon on ESPN... and back then there was just one ESPN.

Plus they aired bodybuilding shows.

Also American Gladiators.

Today the only rather extreme bodies you see on tv are UFC fighters....but you also have to watch all the blood and gory which was not common back then.

I think female bodybuilding was more popular in the past.

Now you only see crossfit or wellness girls.

sorry but during the 90s you had "bodyshaping", "kiana tom", etc. at noon on ESPN.

Plus they would show tournaments regularly.

Plus you had American Gladiators!!!

Today you want to see a bodybuilder type of girl on tv and it's impossible.

The closest you will get is a UFC fighter.

Seems your tv doesn't show pro wrestling then? Nice to preserve your original post given you're now editing the shyt out of it. Delete delete delete as approved by Matt Hardy

Definitely not imagining it and her husband Bill Wick also had a huge role but whether they were the first isn't for my money cast iron.

The thing that actually turns me on the most.

Me too. It adds to the appeal of being strong. I got my start with the Popeye cartoon Never Kick A Woman where a fairly buff blonde gives Olive a beating and mocks her for being skinny. I loved it all up until the spinach.

they stopped showing WWE some time ago here.

even when they were showing it the only muscular girl was jade and most of the time she was not there.

This isn't a difficult question to answer, guys. There's no reason to agonize over it.

The question was:

when did muscle worship become a thing as a business?

The first Olympic games were held in 776 BC. There are several manuscripts that describe being "entertained" by muscular people that predate that. What better way to increase exposure than to have a public games, thus bringing the "entertainers" into the forefront? There's always more than one angle to historical actions, and financial gain is always one of them.

I thought the question was about female muscle worship. male muscle worship is so mainstream it's hard to even consider it a fetish. But I am sure that the ancient Greeks would look down on men that wanted to worship strong women. but there probably were people into that but they didn't write about it since writing was a rare skill back then. and most of stuff from that long ago got destroyed. so even if someone was writing female muscle erotica back then it probably got lost in some accident.

It was about female muscle worship obviously by the guesses or just reading the initial post. I don't think Greek men admired female muscle....what there was of it.....back then. Not in public since women were not considered equals at that time. I'm 99.9% sure that some guy worshipped or had a fetish for strong women before the last 100 years. The circus strongwomen and acrobats were the farthest back I know of documenting admiration for female muscle with claims of the strongest woman in the world by Katie Sandwina.

Wick and Kay were not the first, but they were amongst the first or perhaps the 1st to film wrestling vs men and other women and sell it. They used muscle women. Apartment wrestling was around decades earlier. I'm not sure if there was any muscle there, but I never saw it documented. Eric Stanton had some great art of strong women dominating men and women in wrestling in the 50's and 60's. They sold lots, but could not copyright so the money was mostly paid to people who just stole them or came into them and copied them in bulk. Stanton got $100 a page in the late 80's when he was still at it. I wrote him and told him I was 21 and he told me I could not afford him. He also said most of his popular cartoons were suggested to him by more than one person...indicating a demand.

Interestingly, Amazons were a frequent motive on ancient greek pottery. They appeared on Vases second only to pictures of Hercules.

From the exhibition of the Met: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/sear...

Scholars and experts like Larissa Befonte, Mustafa Bashir or Adrienne Mayor describe the relation in a way, that women in ancient greek society were seen as subordinate citizens, however, there was a deep fascination by the myths of the amazon women. Although the pictures on the Vases dont really show muscular women, they were warrior women. One side of the chest burnt so that they can better throw the speer.

There was also this guy O.J. Heller who saw the roots of female bodybuilding in the circus (strong women, trapeze artists). Must have some time around the 40s or 50s, that circus artists started performing open air at Santa Monica, and out of that early muscle women appeared

All not as explicit as today, but the fascination for strong women runs deep in society. Requires a bit of a research, but you will find that those historic muscle women had their admirers too.

before the 80s there wasn't much muscle at all so worshiping was not a thing either probably.

the whole thing of looking at somebody and not being able to believe how they look came with steroids.... so 80s, 90s and later.

I see the bikini type outfit. I don't see that they valued women's strength and athleticism from that picture. Thanks for the link. Art was all they had in that era as most did not have the ability to write.

It should be muscle appreciation instead of muscle worship. Males and females are equally attracted to these body types. Not all men are built the same. Same as women. Everyone has their preferences. I appreciate seeing developed bicep peaks and huge developed calves on a female. I’m sure it’s the same for females who are attracted to men with the same body type. That’s my two cents…
