Smartphone addiction

I wanna discuss this with you.

I'm one of the few people to keep the phone in my pocket, and use it when needed in a normal way.

I've seen older people getting trapped too, and honestly I would have never guessed this scenario 10 years ago.

It's a huge problem here in Italy, and I think all around the world.

Social interaction doesn't exists anymore, because phones killed it.

I don't go out for dinner or to celebrate New Year's Eve with friends anymore, 'cause it was obnoxious to say the least.

You can't watch a movie in a theater, without notification sounds heard for the whole time, loud music on public transport, clerks ignoring you to focus on their phones.

Today's life is a neverending nightmare in my opinion.

People drive while texting even on curvy roads, bus drivers with 40+ passengers on board do the same.

The situation is insanely out of control 😢

Yes. Let me add to it: people listening to music or watching videos without headphones in public spaces.

People who HIKE while blasting music from their phone. It's even more annoying when they have portable bluetooth speakers attached to their backpacks so they can blast their music louder.

I'm trying to enjoy the sounds of nature and being outdoors, and it's jarring hearing their shitty music.

It's only gonna get worse.

We seem to have lost the ability to just be bored on the bus sometime in the past 15 years.

I kind of want to go back to a dumb phone. But I can't get away from various work / authenticator apps. I do wish they'd come out with a low power "basic" mode for android phones that just does the very bare minimum functionality of calls / text / alarms / camera without loading the whole OS or any apps though. That would be more useful than adding a dumb AI button.

I have a relative who got hooked on TikTok in a very unhealthy way.

If you look up her app usage, or the amount of data left in her monthly plan + Wi-Fi data, you will be shocked.

She had overheating issues on 3 different phones during summer.

Myself, gaming on PC. Cellphone, for me, is as basic as I can get (I want to swap back to the older flipphone, since the new Androids (Samsung) only have about 3 days charge (new) and, current one has 4-5 hours per charge. I was spoiled with the 3-4 weeks per charge.

In my opinion, technology and social media has destroyed society, the art of conversation is gone everyone just stares at a damn screen now, people would never say the things they say about a person online to their face. It’s just to easy to be assholes sitting behind your phone, seems like if you say good morning to someone on the street they look at you like your from another planet.

I just use my phone when I'm on the treadmill or stairmaster with my airpods. Nobody contacts me anyways except for my parents or other family members. Computer for me as well. I'm old school as well I would like to meet women outside and not using the phone or apps or sites etc.

The businesses that run everything have found a way into our pockets. They can distract us with notifications from a thousand sources all the time. It’s become so just holding onto a thought is more and more difficult. People (at least I) can’t focus the way I used to. At any moment, we might be subjected to advertising no matter what the setting. We might be subject to propaganda no matter where we are. Even other people’s phones (like with Gatsby’s hikers) are an intrusion into our thoughts. We’ve always had to make room for external inputs, I guess. But it’s become too arduous to maintain some kind of silence or focus. This is a spiritual crisis for all of us, I really believe it. The phones just make us more of a consumer, not more of a person.

Just set all notifications silent when you get a new phone, and for every new app. This is a must, everytime you get a new phone. And do it to your parents' phones too.

Factory settings are addiction settings, default options cannot be trusted.

TikTok is probably the least healthy short form video app since it was deliberately designed from the beginning to be addictive. Set up some app time limiters to taper yourself off and ideally move to consuming longer form video content instead (try focus on one subject for more than 15 minutes at a time). Would also recommend swapping to FireFox with Ublock Origin and SponsorBlock extensions installed to make YouTube usable again (just skip the shorts).

I am 19 and I still do this, easier not to get catfished 😅. And yes phones have also made it so people say the most awful things now because they are used to the Internet and current culture were you can't beat someone up for saying anything awful these days.

I can't for instance miss work emails and messages, but the thing got out of hand.

When I first started, I checked emails on my PC and that was it.

Now everyone (suppliers) gets in touch for the dumbest reasons, or to compulsively promote products, intentionally creating an unbearable work environment.

They send the same message on 2-3 different platforms, just to increase your stress level. 😢

And when you try to distill your inputs down to just one source, they begin to insist on two-step authentication more and more just to ensure that you need more than one platform. It's not just an unbearable work enironment, it's an unbearable lifelong assault.

When I was a teen in 2010s, I used to give 0 fucks about my smartphone, I would leave it behind my couch for weeks and literally almost never use it. I became more dependent on it only when I started working, because I needed to use WhatsApp. Also, after leaving school I became more lonely and I would rely on the internet to keep me entertained. For a few years now I use it almost constantly, I open my phone and check this forum, as well as a few others literally every morning, which I never used to do. I miss the times, when I would wake up and just go to school without even going online for a second.

Being able to listen to podcasts while I cycle is nice, but I guess I could just listen to radio instead. Sometimes I wish that damn Carrington Event happened and society would go back a few decades in technology, I think it would be very cathartic for literally millions of us.
