Don't report. Just delete. Here's how and why (April Fools 2022)

You'll notice that as long as you're logged in, you now have a "Delete image" button under each upload:

This does exactly what you think it does. After some consideration, I've decided to give everyone the ability to delete images. There are two main reasons for this:

Overwhelmed site staff. There has been a steady increase in upload volume over the past few years and the mods are getting to the point where we can't keep up. With an increased number of uploads comes a greater number of image reports, and this is pointless busywork that the mods have neither the time nor effort to deal with. Therefore, it makes sense to let you skip the reporting step altogether and go right to deleting the image without having to involve the mods.

Running out of hard drive space. Not only has there been an increase in the number of uploads, but a greater portion of the uploads nowadays are videos. A single video takes up about 10x the disk space of the average image. I think TikTok is to blame for this, but regardless of where you point the blame, the truth is the server is running out of space faster than ever before. Now I wouldn't want to encourage you to delete images at random or anything like that, but if you were to unburden the site of some uploads, that... wouldn't be the worst. To illustrate what I mean: Large video loading slowly? Delete. Model in the image already has tons of pics on the site? Delete. Annoying comments on an upload? Straight to the delete button. You don't have to think very hard about this.

When you delete an image, you'll see this page:

When you click your Back button to go back to the image, you'll get a 404 Not Found because the image has been deleted. You'll have to click Back one more time.

Thanks, everyone, for helping out. Remember: Don't report. Just delete.

You have a strong point but you might have opened a can of worms.

I don't know if that's such a great idea. It could even be disastrous.

It would have been better to remove the "Report" button.

Yea, I totally fell for this.

I was looking for a way to report this new-found power that had accidentally been given to me.

If it's not a joke, it's a terrible idea.

With great power comes great irresponsibility. I'm hoping its an April fool's joke, otherwise just pray that the entire catalog isn't wiped clean by the end of the day.

It would have been better to remove the "Report" button. Ok, today is THAT DAY...☺️

I can see it coming. BUT I'm gonna press the button anyway!

And there was me for a second thinking I'd been made a Mod for all my good report post work... how bout a tempting "delete" button but instead of deleting the image it deletes the user's account?

Apr 01, 2022 - permalink

Unfortunately there's an upper limit to the pics you can delete. I reached it. ;)

I'm not sure who's playing whom for a fool here, but I just checked out some pages and the big red delete button is there and looks very ready to use. So maybe we ARE all limited mods at least for now. If this is for real, my only serious suggestion is than anyone who has uploaded an image and had it deleted should be entitled to an immediate appeal process. Otherwise this liberalized delete procedure could quickly become a hotbed of petty infighting, revenge, and all manner of other abuses. BTW, I thought images proposed for uploading had to be reviewed by GWM staff to ensure suitability BEFORE initial posting.

Very suspicious date choice to announce such a big change. I'm not gonna believe anything until this day is over.

OMG! I just pressed it. It deleted all the pictures on my hard drive!
