I just have to ask...

Nov 03, 2021 - permalink

Not too long ago, anyone visiting the site could comment on a photo without needing an account. Moderators have changed things exactly because of the reasons you just described. I imagine things have gotten better since comments were disabled for non-registered viewers.

Yes i think that over years. Some of the comments are really strange and often unrealistic. And often i think that these people believe in there comments...

I've lost 20 or 30 iq points reading wollbern's posts. Def some absolute cretins in the photo section.

This isn't quite true. An account has been required to comment for almost all of the site's history (except maybe the first few months to a year, in 2008-9). What was changed recently was that now an account is required to see the image comments at all, whereas up until ~6 months ago unregistered users could read comments as well.

In the forums, the conversations seem more salient and intelligent (pretty much...)

I've definitely been trying fairly hard to moderate the forum in this regard and get rid of stupid/low-effort threads/comments before they get off the ground, and the other mods try to do the same. The image comment section is a different beast due to the overwhelming number of comments, which I discussed here.

Chainer - You'll likely disagree, but the nonsensical, worthless posts in the images section would take of themselves if the Mods would just let other members have their say without ramification. I've seen members chastised, censored and even banished when they took strong and opinionated stances against stupid and/or vacuous posts. Do you have any idea how tempting it is to call out Vovin1000's idiocy for his dumbass, worthless comments on virtually every single new photo posted? It's almost as if he's made a career out of being a pain-in-the-ass on this site.

Out of morbid curiosity I looked up some of his comments and immediately regretted it.

Also, 53,000+ image comments? Holy shit!

@Farnsworth it seems to me that you're needlessly getting exasperated about it. Just keep in mind: you don't have to. I mean... you can, nobody's telling you you can't.

But if it makes your experience worse, just move past it. How are you going to change what people come here to write? As it is, different people have different ways of interacting with this site. I might not appreciate some kind of posting habits, I might giggle at some stupid posts for how immature they are, but I don't think it's worth it to loose sleep over it. I don't think this is the right platform to try to educate people

I think too that a fair amount of us feel comfortable hiding behind our computer/phone screens and possibly know that the people on the other side can’t hurt us. It’s easier to just ignore and move on. Some people even would try to start a fight but we know it won’t end well for either person (getting kicked off the site would be an example)

I'm not convinced, to say the least, that adding hostility and aggression to the image comments is what will make them better. For one, there's no reason to believe that someone with so little self awareness would care about your posts, or even read them.

We could experiment with putting a limit on the number of comments a user can make per day, but then they'd just register additional accounts to bypass it and it would just get harder for us to track (vovin in particular already has had a bunch of alts).

I think one root cause of the problem is that there just isn't all that much interesting discussion to be had about most pictures, but people feel the need to make vapid comments anyway.

I agree with this. Just look at the chat and how some of those conversations go. The discussion gets pretty centralized and it looks like most people aren’t sure what to say so they react instead.

As someone who's definitely made some pretty mindless comments on photos before, I think it would be nice if there was a reason to actually think before posting something on an image. Of course, I could just up and do that without any reason but seeing how low effort the average image comment is, it makes me think that it isn't worth the effort coming up with something of substance to say.

sprt - see my response to gaz. To me, it's a matter of equity. For example, if vovin1000 is allowed to make over 53,000 completely moronic and useless comments on this site, I and others should have the freedom to respond to that without Mod interference. Seems to me that this would result in a net-good for the site, in general.

Dear Lord Farnsworth every time I read your posts your sitting on high and talking down to someone. It looks like again your itching to start an argument where there is none. Nobody... and I repeat NOBODY wants to give you the freedom to respond to someone else's image comments without Mod interference. If you don't like Vovin's 53000 posts.... don't read em. The guy is well behaved and I haven't read one single thread where he's judged someone else.

I just don't see how these comments are problem status?

Lol, maybe there should be a math problem you have to solve for each image comment you post, which is fine if you are posting a few worthwhile comments, but maybe gets too irritating for the repeated low-effort ones.

Basically the strategy would be to make the process of posting a comment be more annoying, on purpose.

It's ah taboo sport & guys have an outlet for their attraction. Men are pigs 🤪 deal with it.

Another reason I think users do it is to "bump" an image to the front page, in the hopes of getting it more noticed (trying to squeeze out a few more upvotes). I've scolded users with warnings about leaving too many worthless comments on images, especially if they are doing it on their own uploads. It's not that they aren't allowed to bump their images, they just need to put at least a shred of effort into making it interesting (i.e. not worthless).

Yeah vovin isn't a perpetrator of what I described above (he doesn't have any uploads to his credit) so I don't care. It's a shame he's getting singled out in this thread though... reminds me of a user who impersonated him not long ago. Whoever it was seemed to have anger issues.

I’ve heard of fbbs and muscular women in general who have a distaste for schmoes. I think the root cause is stuff like this.

Small rant: I have seen posts here and in other forums about guys who feel ashamed or embarrassed about their attraction to buff women. I have never felt shame for it, but it’s frustrating to see comments like what the OP referenced because I think it perpetuates a broad, negative stereotype of guys who are attracted to buff women. Not all dudes who like muscular women are creeps, but unfortunately creeps can be quite loud, and when said women see that, it’s hard to blame them for not liking those who are attracted to them.

I saw on another site somewhere this site being mentioned, and being dissed because someone had started a thread asking why muscular women are so ugly, or words to that effect. I thought yeah I don't blame them. How could a thread with a title like that even be allowed.
