Just some suggestions, but I feel like the home page needs to be revamped a little.  My thoughts are this:

1.  Recently Posted needs to be expanded because at any given time there could be 20-100 new posts uploaded in a matter of minutes.  10 slots just doesn't seem like enough.
2.  High Score Today should be somewhere other than the bottom of the page.  This is the crème de la crème of what the site has to offer.
3.  Does Recently Commented need to be on the Home page?  Users already get notifications about comments to posts they're subscribed to, so it seems a bit redundant.
4.  Perhaps we could replace Recently Commented with a "Random" section.  It could refresh each time the user visits the page.

Interesting. Some of the points are good, but I'm not sure they outweigh the reasons the layout is the way it is right now.

Recently Posted needs to be expanded because at any given time there could be 20-100 new posts uploaded in a matter of minutes.  10 slots just doesn't seem like enough.

The number of thumbs that you see changes depending on what device you're using (phone vs. desktop) but yeah, it could be increased.

High Score Today should be somewhere other than the bottom of the page.  This is the crème de la crème of what the site has to offer.

On the one hand that is true, if you look at the home page once every day or two, this is the section you're most likely to be interested in. On the other hand, both the Recently Posted and Commented sections change more quickly than the High Score section so they're more likely to be interesting if you visit the site frequently.

Does Recently Commented need to be on the Home page?  Users already get notifications about comments to posts they're subscribed to, so it seems a bit redundant.

The big benefit of having it on the home page is that it lets comments double as a way of bumping a picture to the front page for some extra visibility. If we removed this from the front page, then chances are that if you leave a comment on an older picture (even just > 1 day old, as long as it's not one of the high scorers) very few people would see your comment. But the way that it is now makes it so people will see both the picture and the comment, which makes commenting more interesting.

Perhaps we could replace Recently Commented with a "Random" section.  It could refresh each time the user visits the page.

Random pictures is an interesting idea. The drawback is that getting random pictures is fairly performance intensive, although this could be worked around. We could maybe put a random pics section below the High Score section, although there is already a way to get random pics if you're interested in that.

To clarify, I am a PC user of the site, I haven't used the mobile version at all.  So this is all based on my PC experience.

I think I understand your point about commenting.  You want to encourage users to participate.  All I can say is personally I don't really care about what others might be saying on a post I'm not subscribed to, especially since most of the time it's a simple compliment to the girl in the post.

And if leaving out a Random Post section off the home page because the user can just do it themselves manually, that same logic could be applied to every section currently there.  And as for the intensity on performance, it wouldn't be generating a full page of 100 results, just a smaller section like the others.  I just can't imagine more than a barely noticeable bump in load time, but I could be wrong.  I'm not necessarily a programmer  ;D

I do like the random picture idea, I'll look into the performance side of things.

Hey Chainer, another idea I had, similar to the random picture idea, just slightly modified.
As you know, many high-scoring pics eventually get buried and forgotten. On the home page, a 4th category could be introduced which summons randomly selected high-scoring pics, the threshold of which would need to be determined of course, say any pic with +100 favorites would be considered by the new algorithm.
I propose this mostly because this website has grown so much so quickly that hundreds of great new pics are uploaded daily, so many users may miss pics that if only were given a "second chance" on the homepage would skyrocket, if you know what I mean.
Just a suggestion, I know you're a busy person.

That is a pretty good take on the random pic idea.
